{REVIEW} Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Title: Bone Gap
Author: Laura Ruby
Series: Stand-alone
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fiction
Publication: March 3rd, 2015
Rating: ★★★★☆

Everyone knows Bone Gap is full of gaps.

So when young, beautiful Roza went missing, the people of Bone Gap weren’t surprised. But Finn knows what really happened to Roza. He knows she was kidnapped by a dangerous man whose face he cannot remember.

As we follow the stories of Finn, Roza, and the people of Bone Gap, acclaimed author Laura Ruby weaves a tale of the ways in which the face the world sees is never the sum of who we are.
To be honest, I had no clue what this book was about when I first picked it up. I saw some people talking about it on Twitter and was immediately enthralled and curious to find out more about it. Let me just tell you ... one of the best decisions I've ever made. Really.

Bone Gap is a mysterious, utterly confusing but highly enjoyable book that will keep you guessing about what's actually going on throughout the whole book. No boring moments, no plot holes (at least not obvious to me) and no cringe-worthy romances or anything like that. Instead it captivates you with brilliant, well fleshed-out characters that are all so different and weird/funny/sweet in their own way so by the end of it you'll love (almost) everyone.

The beautiful writing is another huge bonus because, seriously, I couldn't get enough of it. Laura Ruby definitely knows how to write things so they sound beautiful and lyrical. I loved it! The characters and plot line were both incredibly interesting and just felt whole to me ... you know what I mean? Yes, I was confused most of the time and had no clue what's actually happening but that's exactly what I needed. It's what this makes a great book! And in the end everything makes sense. You get this "Ahaaa!" moment when it clicks and every puzzle piece finds its place - which feels amazing, by the way.

But speaking of characters ... let's start off with Finn. He's seen as the weird guy, a bit crazy and no one really takes him seriously but actually ... he knows a lot of things. It's just that no one believes him and if everyone thinks you're crazy ... maybe it's true? Finn is a brilliant character - the way he changes throughout the book made my heart swell with pride and happiness because HECK YES! I knew he's the brave and clever guy no one wanted to see. And our beloved Petey? Oh man, where do I even start? She's an "ugly" girl, tough and brutally honest with a sharp tongue which I loved. Also, she's raising bees and while I do hate all (buzzing) insects I was so fascinated and intrigued by her.

Then there's Sean, Finn's bigger brother, who's quiet and composed and so in love with Roza. Speaking of Roza ... she's probably one of the most important things of this book. She's been kidnapped - which Finn saw but no one believed him - and is an incredible character on her own. I loved her right from the beginning. Her story, her background ... she's just great.

To not spoil anything, I won't go into more detail. Are you curious? You wanna know more about speaking corn, horses, honey and bees? You want to read a book with characters that you'll love and a storyline so confusing (in a good way!) but interesting which will keep you hooked till the very last page? Then go pick up Bone Gap IMMEDIATELY. It's worth it, trust me.

  1. After reading your review I just need this book. I want to find out everything that's going on in it. I just gotta!

    1. Yaaay!!! You should definitely check it out, I liked it a lot! :D

  2. I'm really looking forward to reading this, so seeing that you enjoyed it, just gets me more excited! It sounds like a really interesting book. What made you give it four stars instead of five though?

    1. I couldn't even give you a reason for that, honestly. 5 star books for me are ones that make me DEAD after I finish them ... I just love everything about them and while I also loved Bone Gap it didn't feel like a 5 star book to me - that doesn't make it any less good though. :D

I really hope you get to read it soon AND enjoy it as much as I did! :D

  3. I've seen this book around for quite some time, but I still haven't gotten around to reading it! Your great review really helps make me move the book up my TBR, so hopefully I'll get to it sooner rather than later!
