{REVIEW} The Selection by Kiera Cass

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Series: The Selection #1
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopia
Publication: April 24th, 2012
Rating: ★★★★☆

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Before I even started reading I heard lots of different opinions about "The Selection" series. Some liked and enjoyed it, others absolutely loved it and then there were also the ones who disliked it. I've read a few reviews and honestly I understand each and every review. I guess it's just a book you either like or not, there's no in between. For me it's definitely the first! I'm actually really surprised how much I've enjoyed and loved this book!

"True love is usually the most inconvenient kind."

America Singer - the name already made me sceptic because seriously ... it's just a weird name. However, throughout the book I grew to like it and it didn't bother me anymore. She's definitely an interesting character and I liked that she stood up for the things she believed in. If I compare her to the other girls she's also really brave and admirable. She wanted everyone (yes, I'm also talking about her maids) to be treated equally and even copes with difficult situations. There were also moments where she was absolutely hilarious, sarcastic but then again kind and helpful. The only thing I didn't really like was Aspen and that she constantly thought about him. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed their relationship in the beginning but when they broke up and everything happend with Maxon ... I simply forgot about Aspen. I was even annoyed when he showed up again.

Prince Maxon on the other hand was gorgeous! I think I immediately fell in love with him. Not because he's a prince or handsome (although those are definitely plus points) but because he's so ... sweet. He's a bit awkward but still so elegant, I just loved him a lot! The "friendship" between him and America is amazing and that they slowly fell in love with each other made it even better. It didn't seem too forced or anything like that, it's just something that happened. And as you can guess, I'm on Maxon's team! *sigh*

There's no real storyline, I think? Yeah, sure, there's the Selection and a bit about the rebels but that's pretty much it. It's mostly about the girls "fighting" over Maxon (or the crown) and reminded me a lot of "The Bachelor" and all those shows. I'm not a huge fan of it but as a book I obviously enjoyed it much more than I expected to. I'm still really curious about these attacks, what's wrong with Marlee (there's obviously a secret she keeps) and of course who'll have to go next. I can't believe I'm so excited. Seriously.

"I hope you find someone you can't live without. I really do. And I hope you never have to know what it's like to have to try and live without them."

Overall it was an amazing and quick read that I really enjoyed. Like I said in the beginning it's either something you like or not but it's entertaining and I didn't expect to read something super deep and meaningful, that's probably why I'm not disappointed. So yeah, if you're not too picky and critical with what you're reading it's definitely worth checking it out! And don't forget:
"It's always the fear of looking stupid that stops you from being awesome."

  1. I am one of those people who didn't really care for it. I don't hate it, it just wasn't for me. I am glad you enjoyed it though. :)

    1. Oh, I'm sorry! So you didn't continue the series?
Actually I don't really know why I'm so excited for this ... I guess it just entertained me and Maxon is cute, so yeah. :D
